Okay, seriously? I had mentioned previously that I liked Carrington and I was thinking of sending you a message asking if you had written much about Varo and now here she is! She is my favorite surrealist painter by far (I'm not even really into surrealism) because of all her magical imagery and odd figures. I actually did an art study with some of my older students (5th graders) a couple years ago and they were fascinated by her, and hearing their interpretations of her paintings was so eye-opening.

Oh my, that makes me so happy! My Doctoral thesis focuses on the friendship between Carrington and Varo, and how they, like a vast majority of female artists participating in Surrealism, were pushed to the periphery of the movement by their peers and art history. I adore them and when I started this newsletter I just knew the first people I would write about had to be them. It fills my heart with joy that you have introduced your students to her work!

I recall seeing some of Remedios and Leonora's paintings at Tate Modern a few years ago. They were absolutely fascinating, and I was really wowed, especially because of the time I wasn't familiar with none of their work, in fact I was just finding out about their existence in the surrealist art world. Thanks for sharing this beautiful article. :)

Thank you for reading, I’m very happy you enjoyed it! Did you see their work at the ‘Surrealism Beyond Borders’ exhibition? They do have some Varo and Carrington paintings in their collection as a whole, but that was the latest major exhibition that featured quite a few of their works at Tate! I’m glad that in recent years both Carrington and Varo are getting more recognition, they certainly deserve it.

Yes, that was the one. Fabulous exhibition! So glad I was able to see it.

Eleonora was introduced to me by a friend (he was not into surrealism at all at the time) when he was reading 'The Debutante'. Amazed by Leonora's writing, he shared that with me, as he new I'm interested in surrealistic matters, and we start digging and discovering this truly amazing artist she is. And for that I thank him.

If you enjoy Carrington’s writing I recommend ‘The Hearing Trumpet’ if you haven’t read it, she actually wrote parts of it with Varo, so you get the best of both worlds.
